Agent notified 4 April 1840 - Letter to Pensioner State of Tennessee Warren County On the 8th day of January 1834 personally appeared in open court of pleas and quarter sessions for said County, Samuel Raidinger, a resident of said County and State aged seventy five years the sixth day of last June, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by an Act of Congress passed the seventh of June 1832. That he was drafted in the service of the United States, in York County, Pennsylvania in Nov. he thinks 1777 or 1778 in Capt Michael Smaicer's company. Capt. Smaicer organized his company in Little Yorktown, Pennsylvania and, after remaining there some time, marched to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Just before they reached the Susquehanna River we were overtaken by a detachment of troops from Virginia, officers not recollected, who joined us all under the command of Capt M. Swoop. When we arrived at said river we met nine hundred Hessian prisoners and some British Regulars as he thinks who had been taken prisoner at Trenton as he thinks. When we met the detachment of prisoners, Major Bailey with sixty seven men was sent with the prisoners to guard them. Applicant was one among them. We marched them up within three miles of Little Yorktown, Pennsylvania and there erected a stockade on Jacob Strickler's plantation in which we confined the prisoners and we remained there on guard until the prisoners were exchanged. Then we were discharged and applicant returned home after having served six months and four days. Applicant never entered the service of his Country any more. He received a written discharge but does not recall by whom it was signed, he gave it to his brother John Raidinger who some years after moved to the western part of Pennsylvania and had the misfortune to get his house burnt and applicant's discharge as he is informed by his Brother in it. He therefore has no documentary evidence by which he can prove his service nor does he know of any living witness this side of Pennsylvania by whom he can prove the same. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension role of any agency in any State. Samuel Reidinger Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid William Edmondson, clerk by W. Armstrong, deputy Answers to the interrogations which the War Department to be put by the Court to the applicant. Says that he was born the sixth day of June 1758 in York County, Pennsylvania. He has a record of his age in his family Bible. He lived in York County, Penn. After the close of the war some fifteen or twenty years thence he removed to Montgomery County, Va. where he lived 21 years, thence to Warren County, Tennessee where he now lives and has lived for about 12 years. He was drafted into the service of the United States. He has never served with any regular troops. He has stated in the body of his declaration the general circumstances of his service. He received a written discharge but he does not know by whom it was signed. He gave it to his Brother, John Raidinger, who moved to the western part of the State of Penn. and got his house burnt & applicant's discharge with it as he was informed by his Brother. He is acquainted in the neighborhood where he lives with Alexander Blakely, John K. Wells, George Sumpter, William Duncan and David Younge. Samuel Reidinger Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid William Edmondson, clerk by W. Armstrong, deputy Application for Transfer The State of Alabama, County of Benton. On this nineteenth day of February 1838 before me, the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace for the said County of Benton, personally appeared Samuel Raidinger who, on his oath, declares that he is the same person who formerly belonged to the Company commanded by Captain Michael Smiser in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Michael Swope in the service of the United States; that his name was placed on the pension role of the State of Tennessee from whence he has removed; that he now resides in the State (District or Territory) of Benton, Alabama where he intends to remain, and wishes his pension to be there payable, in future. The following are his reasons for removing from Warren County, Tennessee to Benton County, Alabama - that his son and son in law reside here in Benton and that he lives with them - that he is old and unable to work & has no property here but that he moved here to reside with & have their aid & company in his last days. Samuel Reidinger Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid J. H. Pendleton, J. P. Charles Lewis
