SAMUEL JACKSON Lieut. Samuel Jackson applied for revolutionary pension while living in Washington County, Tenn., July 13, 1829. He was born Sept. 16, 1755. He enlisted in the fall of 1775 and served until he resigned in 1778. He served in Georgia troops under Capt. Joseph Lane and Col. Stark. He was in the battle of Ogeechee River where he was shot in the hip. He died in Washington County, May 2, 1836. His widow, Elizabeth Woodrow Jackson, born Dec. 22, 1764, died Jan. 8, 1844, applied for widow's pension Nov. 6, 1839, while living in Washington County. She was married in Philadelphia, Pa., April 20, 1780. Her children were: Harry, born 1789; Tamey, born 1783, died 1783; Charles, born 1785, died 1786; William, born 1787, died 1787; Susan, born 1788; Mary Ann, born 1790, died 1810: Tamey, born 1793; Julia Adelaide Eliza, born 1797, died 1817; Caroline, born 1799; Harriet, born 1803, and Alfred Eugene, born 1807. Note: Samuel D. Jackson was the son of Philip Jackson. He was born in Carlisle, Pa. He was a merchant in Philadelphia in 1801. He purchased 39,000 acres in Middle Tennessee from Gov. Blount. He moved to Middle Tennessee for a time but returned to East Tennessee, and located on the Nolachukey River. In a wager with Gen. Andrew Jackson he lost 10,000 acres and fought a duel with Jackson in which Jackson ran him through the body with his sword. The historian very quaintly says that this caused a coolness between them. His wife was an intimate friend of Dolly Madison and was a bridesmaid in her first marriage. Concerning her children given in the pension application: Susan W., married Thomas G. Watkins; Julia Adelaide Eliza, married David Anderson Deaderick; Caroline married John A. Aiken; Harriet, married Oliver B. Ross; Alfred Eugene, married Serephina Taylor, daughter of Gen. Nathaniel Taylor. Additional Comments: From: SOME TENNESSEE HEROES OF THE REVOLUTION Compiled From Pension Statements PAMPHLET NO.
