Cloyd JOHNSON CITY -- Mr. James Clinton "Jim" Cloyd, 76, 519 Claude Simmons Road, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in Erwin after a lengthy illness. Mr. Cloyd was a Johnson City native and a son of the late Lake Strong Cloyd and James Earl Cloyd. He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on a baseball scholarship and was recently inducted into the UT Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. Mr. Cloyd was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1956. He completed Harvard University's Small Business Management Program. Mr. Cloyd was president and chief executive officer of United Oil marketers, Inc. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnson City, where he served as senior warden and a member of the vestry. Mr. Cloyd served as a board member of the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Board, The Johnson City Boys Club and the Watauga Area Mental Health Center. He was a member of the Johnson City Jaycees, Johnson City Kiwanis, the Hurstleigh Club and the UT Letterman Club. He was a former chairman of the Washington County Republican Party. Mr. Cloyd was preceded in death by one brother, Charles William Cloyd. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shirley Peterson Cloyd; one son, Chris Cloyd, Chapin, S.C.; three daughters, Eydie Cloyd, Nashville, Janie Cloyd Kirby, Chapin, and Elizabeth Cloyd, Johnson City; one brother, Bob Cloyd, Huntsville, Ala.; four grandchildren; two nieces; and three nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at noon Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church. The Reverend Margaret Zeller will be the Celebrant and The Reverend Frank M. Cooper IV will be the preacher. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Burial Park. Pallbearers will be John Miller, Fred Brandt, Bobby Evans, Leland Lancaster, Buck McClellan,Bo Sells, Phil Walters, Bob Bagby and Matt Raby.
