A native of the Relief community, he was the son of the late Joseph and Marietta Byrd Edwards. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen Morris Edwards; and infant daughter, Rachel Edwards; five brothers; and four sisters. He was a WWII Navy veteran and a retired brick mason, contractor and electrician. He was a member of New Victory Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Reed Edwards; six sons, Eugene Edwards, Robert Edwards, Joseph Edwards and Charles Edwards, all of Telford, Gary Shanks of Morristown, and Larry Edwards of Limestone; four daughters, Judy Evaul of Spruce Pine, Janice Ayers of Jonesborough, Becky McKee of Limestone, and Nancy Smith of Johnson City; a sister, Elizabeth Greene of Telford; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Morris-Bakers Funeral Home. Revs. Terry Abel and Oakley McCoy officiated. Burial followed in Edwards Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
