Hyder Judge Oris D. Hyder, 82, Johnson City, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Judge Hyder was a native of Milligan College and a son of the late Professor Sam Jack Hyder and Mrs. Mary Thomas Hyder. He was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas Exum Hyder, and a sister, Nelta Hyder Warnock. Judge Hyder attended the Training School at East Tennessee State College and graduated from Science Hill High School in 1937. He earned a bachelor's degree from Milligan College in 1941 and a law degree from Vanderbilt University's School of Law in 1948. He also was a graduate of the National College of State Trial Judges and the Louisiana State University School of Banking of the South. He served in the Army Air Corps as an air navigational instructor during World War II and achieved the rank of captain. He continued as an Air Force reservist with Selective Service Flight "T" and retired as a colonel in 1984. He returned to Johnson City after law school and served as Clerk and Master of Washington County from 1948-50. He engaged in private law practice from 1950-58 and served as city judge of Johnson City beginning in 1952. He was elected Criminal Court Judge of the First Judicial District in 1958 and a second term in 1966. He was appointed to the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals from 1969-70. After leaving the bench, he was president and chairman of the board of First People's Bank and later served as a substitute judge. Judge Hyder was a member of the Tennessee Judicial Conference from 1958, having served as its president in 1969. He also had served on the Tennessee Bar Association Board. He served as director and president of the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce; president of the United Way; president of the Salvation Army Advisory Board; president of the Senior Citizens Advisory Board and its Foundation; and member and past president of the Kiwanis Club. He also served on the Johnson City/Washington County Industrial Board; the Johnson City Medical Center Board of Directors; the Washington County Republican Party Executive Committee and the Hurtsleigh Club. Judge Hyder was a founding member of the Institute for Continued Learning at East Tennessee State University, having served as its president in 1995. He was named Young Man of the Year by the Johnson City Junior chamber of Commerce in 1953. He was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, having served as a member of the Vestry, senior warden, layreader and member of the choir. He had served on various church committees and as a delegate to several deacon conventions. He served the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee as a member of the Bishop and Council, parliamentarian and vice chancellor. He was a past president of the Episcopal Laymen of Tennessee. Survivors include his wife, Margaret McKinney Hyder; a son, Michael Oris Hyder, Johnson City; two daughters, Patricia Hyder OBrion, Richmond, Va., and Mary Colin Hyder Santos, Lynchburg, Va.; and two sisters, Carsie Hyder Lodter, Johnson City, and Aline Hyder Hardwick, Bristol. Hyder, 82, Johnson City, who died Sunday, April 21, 2002, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26, at St. John's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will follow at the National Cemetery at Mountain Home with the Rev. Frank Cooper officiating.
