Johnson GRAY, Tenn. -- Elmer Miller Johnson, 190 Browns Road, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the JohnsonCity Medical Center following a brief illness with bone cancer. Mr. Johnson was a native of Scott County,Va., and a son of the late William Thomas and Ethel Cressell Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Allie Johnson; and by two brothers, Isaac Clinton Johnson in 1995, and one who died in infancy. He was a member of Cedar Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Gray. He was faithful in attendance and especially appreciated all the support and encouragement provided by his church family duing his illness. He was a 1944 graduate of Valley Institute High School, Bristol Virginia. He was a veteran and retired in 1997 with 30 years of service from the Veteran's Affairs Canteen Service, Mountain Home, Tenn. He was a 50-year member of the Johnson City Lodge 486 and was serving as the Worshipful Master at the time of his death. He was also a 37-year member of NolaChuckey-Grandview 194, Order of the Eastern Star, and was currently serving as Worthy Patron. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sue Bowlin Johnson; one son, Dr. Mark Steven Johnson and his wife, Kimberly Anne Jones Johnson of Baton Rouge, La.; and two grandchildren, Isaac Thomas and Bailey Elizabeth Johnson, also of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by two sisters and their husbands, Novella and Walmer Gardner, Kingsport, and Imogene and Grady Shankle, Blountville; three nephews and three nieces, Joe Gardner, Kingsport, Lynn Shankle, Blountville, Ronald Johnson, Bristol Virginia, Nancy Gardner Jessee, Olathe, Kan., Lisa Gardner, Kingsport, and Leta Shankle Ogan, Blountville; and several cousins survive him. Mr. Johnson was a good husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He will be remembered as always being kind, considerate and one who tried to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Snyder's Funeral Home, Kingsport Highway, Gray. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Pastor Robert Fultz and Rev. Bob Gilmore will officiate. The Cedar Creek Church Choir will provide music. Charles Cox, Gerald Gray, Terry Nunley, Rick Gilbert, Carlyle Bowman, Harry Wilson, Danny Depew, Allen Fox, Jack Bledsoe and Toby Jobe will be pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the 2002 officers and members of Johnson City Lodge; nephews, Joe Gardner, Lynn Shankle, Ronald Johnson, Gary and Roger Wilson, Brad and Matt Bowlin, Chuck and Jared Bowlin, Jason and Jimmy Horton; and special friend, Freddie Phillips. Brothers-in-law, Jim Bowlin, Colin Bowlin and Joe Horton will also serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment will be at 11 a.m. at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002. Elder John H. Bowlin will officiate. Flowers will be appreciated, but if anyone would wish to do so, memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Creek Baptist Church, P.O.
