Romaine JOHNSON CITY -- Helene Elizabeth Romaine, 82, died at her residence in Greer, S.C., on Saturday, January 6, 2007, following a brief illness. A native of Washington County, Tenn., she lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph D. Romaine, her parents, Betty and Meredith Russell, and her brother, Robert E. Storie, Houma, La. In addition to being a homemaker, Helene was a secretary for O.G. Kelly Company, Johnson City, and bookkeeper for Avtex Fibers, Front Royal, Va. She volunteered for the Veteran's Hospital in Johnson City and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Rosary Altar Society, the Johnson City Senior Citizens Center and the Johnson City Community Theater. She was instrumental in organizing and presiding over the Johnson City chapter of the DOES, the women's auxiliary of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elk (BPOE). Since moving to Greer in 2003, Helene served on the resident's council at Oakleaf Village and volunteered to sew for a local charity. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Greenville. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Suzanne Romaine of Keaau, Hawaii, Catherine and David Henderson of Greer, S.C., and Elizabeth and Ed Ensslin of Westfield, N.J.; and a son and daughter-in-law, David and Arlene Romaine of Darien, Ill. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; a cousin, Jeanne Jones of Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2211 East Lakeview Drive, Johnson City, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 8 p.m., with Fr. Gerard Finucane officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church Capital Campaign, 3710 Augusta Road, Greenville, S.C. 29604.
