WASHINGTON COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - William R. (Bill) Shanks, 11 Mar 2004 ----¤¤¤---- William R. (Bill) Shanks, 77, Bryant Ave., Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2004 in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. A native of Johnson City, he was a son of the late Samuel and Susie Remine Shanks. He had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. He was a 1947 graduate of Science Hill High School. Mr. Shanks was a retired employee of Dogwood Oil Company, Johnson City. He was preceded in death by his son, David Shanks. He was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church. He was the head usher and member of the church choir. Bill was a well-loved and well-respected member of his church and his community, and he was greatly missed by his friends and family. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Marie Ward Shanks; a step-son and his wife, Gary and Margie Swift, of Asheville, N.C.; a step-daughter, Gail Swift Trotter, of Pelzer, S.C.; a brother, Charles Shanks, of Chattanooga; a sister, Mary G. Powell, of Ben Wheeler, Texas; a brother- in-law and his wife, Robert and Helen Ward, of Butler. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2003 in the Lynn Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Wilson, Rev. David Hinkle and Dr. Bill Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Johnson City. Music will be provided by William J. Greene and Kelly Rapert. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 3:20 p.m. Saturday, will be Richard Kyte, Chris Wilson, Robert Parks, Joe Buckles, Bob Wilson and David Shouse. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family. The family would like to express a special "thank you" to American Home Health for all their kindness and the 1st and 2nd wards of the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center. The family of Baptist Church. Friends may also call at the residence.
