Smith Hal H. Smith, age 85, died Nov. 19, 2002, at Westminster-Thurber Retirement Community. He retired in 1982 from East Tennessee State University where he served as head librarian and microfilms librarian for 34 years. Before coming to E.T.S.U. he worked at the New York Public Library, University of Chicago Library and served as director of the Warton American Technical School Library, which was operated for GI's by the U.S. Army in England. He was a 1941 graduate of Berea College and later earned two professional degrees at the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago. During 4 1/2 years in World War II , he served as an Army Warrant Officer with the First Coast Artillery in Panama and the Signal Corps, Medical Corps and Special Services in Europe. His professional memberships and activities were in the American Library Association, the Association of College and University Libraries, state and regional library associations, Phi Delta Kappa and American Association of University Professors. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City, Tenn., for many years where he served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, steward, trustee and on various church boards, commissions and councils. He served as president of the Washington County Retired Teacher's Association for two years in Tennessee. He was born and reared in Bristol Tennessee, to William David and Mattie Randolph Smith. Survived by: wife, Florence Muelder Smith; daughters, Ruth Smith of Worchester, Mass., Carol Smith of Falls Church, Va.,. and Judith Smith-Bechtel of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City or to the East Tennessee State University Library. He donated his body to The Ohio State University School of Medicine for medical research. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
