WASHINGTON COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - A. Milton Ward, 16 Mar 2004 ----¤¤¤¤---- ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A. Milton Ward, "Uncle Miltie" to many of his friends, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at his home in Tryon, N.C. Mr. Ward was a native of Johnson City, Tenn., and the son of the late Arnold Clayton and Cora Lee Hodge Ward. After graduating from Watauga Academy at Butler, Tenn., Mr. Ward enlisted in the Marine Corps in World War II, was in armaments with the VMF 123rd Fighter Group, and later was with the first U.S. troops sent into Japan following its surrender. Following his military service, he attended East Tennessee State University and Milligan College, and in 1951 was hired by Piedmont Airlines. He retired as station manager at the Greenville- Spartanburg Airport for Piedmont Airlines, after 38 years. Miltie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clara Pearson Ward, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve and Chris Ward, Alpharetta, Ga., and John Ward, Marshall, Texas; and four grandchildren, Christy Ward Hemsworth, Jonathan, Julia and Matthew Ward. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at the Congregational Church in Tryon. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, Outreach Ministries, or the charity of your choice.
