Gore Supervisor - Mrs. Caroline S. Kelso CHURCH CEMETERIES BAPTIST 1. Bean Cove - Large - 2 miles E. of Sparta. Land given by Landon Swift about 1910. 2. Greenwood - Large and very old. 1 mile S. of Doyle. 3. Gum Springs - Large - 12 miles S.W. of Sparta. 4. Liberty - The Church was erected 1899. About two years later the land for the Cemetery was given by Harrison Cope (Uncle Tip Cope). He gave the greater part of money and material to build the Church and was noted for his great church work and kindness to the poor. He and his Saintly wife are burried in this Cemetery. 9 mi.W.of Sparta. 5. Macedona - (Saylors) - Large -8 miles N. of Sparta. William Price, a Revolutionary Soldier, son of Capt. Thos Price, is burried here. The D.A.R. erected a monument here to his memory in 1938 6. New Hope - Large - 8 miles W. of Sparta. 7. Philidelphia - Large - 12 miles S. W. of Sparta. 8. Pistol - Small - The land was given for the Church and Cemetery by Stephen Pistol. 12 miles N. W. of Sparta. 9. Pleasant Hill - Small - 6 miles of Sparta. CHRISTIAN 10. Bethlemen - Large - 6 miles S. of Sparta. 11. Cherry Creek - Large - 8 miles N. of Sparta. Very old - Not known how old as it was there long before the church was built. 12. Corinth - Small - 6 miles W. of Sparta. 13. Jerico - Large - 8 miles N. of Sparta. 14. O'Conner - Small - 8 miles N. of Sparta. Land was given by Sidney Alcorn. About 1895. METHODIST 15. Birds Memorial - Small - 5 miles N. E. of Sparta. 16. Mt. Gilsad - Large - 6 miles S. W. of Sparta. In this Cemetery, (cont'd) MT. GILEAS (Cont'd) Dudley Hunter, the well known horse trainer is burried here. He was considered one of the bravest men in the County and gave more horses to the soldiers in time of War. He was killed by the Texas Rangers because he refused to give them a young horse he thought so much of. He told them he would give them any horse or as many horses as they wished if they would leave that one. 17. Mt. Hermon - Small - 12 miles N.E. of Sparta. 18. Peeled Chestnut - Large - 12 miles W. of Sparta. 19. Pisgah - Large - 8 miles S. W. of Sparta. John Knowles, who was born in Ireland, died in White County and is burried in this Cemetery. In the Irish Religious Rebellion, his life was being threatened. His sister tore bed linen in strips and let him down from an upstairs window so that he might make his es- cape. He then came to this Country. He gave the land for the Church and Cemetery. Howard P. Hudson - who wrote "Southern Lyrics" and other books, is Also burried here. 20. Shady Grove - Large - 9 miles W. of Sparta. 21. Wesley Chapel - Small - 9 miles W. of Sparta PRESBYTERIAN 22. New union - Large - 8 miles S.W. of Sparta 23. Old Lion - Large - One of the oldest in the County. Old Mr. Jim Kelly and wife are about the first ones to be buried in this Cemetery. There are no names or dates stones. It was told that during the War, a band of men came and were going to kill him. He had some ladders fixed so that when he saw them he said: "Come on men". Here they came and knocked these ladders over. They got scared and ran off and there was no one left but him. There is a grave that built up about 2 feet with Limestone rock and a flat rock on top. No inscription is on it. Tradition says a very beautiful girl, Mary Dunnagan, who had an unhappy love af- fair is buried here. 24. Old Union - Large - 7 miles S. of Sparta. Major William Lewis is buried here. Also Spencer Mitchell, the man that the town of Spencer in Van Burin County is named for, is buried in this Cemetery. 25. Robinsons Chapel - Small - 12 miles N. In Blue Spring Community. Buried in this Cemetery is the well known Barlow Fisk, son of Moses Fisk who was a very prominent man of the County. Barlow Fisk built the famous Rock House on Cumberland Mountain where the Presidents often stopped for the night.as they were passing through. 2. Anderson & Wilhite - Small - 8 miles N. of Sparta. In Cherry Chreek Community. During the War, these two men were killed by some spies that came through. After taking the boots and clothing of the men and what money they could find, the spies took them out and made them wade in a deep pond for a long time then took them out and shot them. These two families lived together so the women burried the men on the place where they lived. That was the begiuning of this 3. Baker - Small - 6 miles W. of Cassville in Hutchings College Com- munity. 4. Beam - Small - 6 miles N. E. of Sparta - Blue Spring Community. 5. Brewster - Small - 3 miles W. of Sparta on the Obe Jared farm. The oldest grave in this Cemetery is Amanda Brewster who died Aug. 1858. 6. Brock - Small - 7 miles N. E. of Sparta in Brock Cove. Elmore Brock gave the land for this Cemetery. John Brock, son of Elmore Brock, owns the land now. Aaron England and Enos England, both Civil War Soldiers, are buried in this Cemetery. 7. Brown - Small - 5 miles N. E. of Sparta in Plainville Community. 8. Brown - Small - 11 miles N. of Sparta -Post Oak Community. Sam Brown gave the land for this Cemetery in 1879. Land now owned by Harvey Bullock. 9. Brown - Small - 3 miles N. of Sparta. 10. Broyles - Small - 3 miles W. of Sparta. Mat Broyles gave the land for this Cemetery about 1834. It is now owned by Jack Kenet. Mat Broyles was the first one to be buried here. In 1835. 11. Cameron - Small - 4 miles N. of Sparta - Calf Killer Community. 12. Cody - Small - 4 miles N.E. of Sparta - Wild Cat Cove Community. 13. Cole - Small - 4 miles N.E. of Sparta - Wild Cat Cove Community. 14. Conner - Small - 3 miles N. of Sparta. In Findley Community. Sid Conner gave the land for this Cemetery in 1905 and was the first person to be buried here in 1905. The land is now owned by Dixie Conner. 15. Cook - Small - 6 miles W. of Sparta in Green Bottom. Robert Cook is buried in this cemetery. He helped hold the first County Court in White County. He made his own tombstone, worked on it for years (cont'd) COOK (Cont'd) And after it was finished he kept it in his room and his grandchil- dren would go there and play on it. He was married twice and both marriages were put on the stone. He was with Washington at the Bat- tle of Valley Forge where they nearly starved and froze to death. 16. Davis - Small - 9 miles West of Sparta - Green Brier Bend. 19. Dibrell - Small - 4 miles N. E. of Sparta in Wild Cat Cove. 20. Disehner - Very Small - 3 miles N. W. of Sparta. 21. Dobbs - Large - 8 miles W. of Sparta in Athens. Land is now owned by Cory Hitchcock. Have no record of who gave the land or date but this is a very old Cemetery. 22. Eller - Small - 4 miles N. E. of Sparta in Yankee Town Community. Land for this Cemetery was given by Uncle John Eller in 1888. 23. England - Small - 8 miles N.W. of Sparta in O'Conner Community. The land was given by a Mr. Montgomery in 1855. He was a very rich man and both he and his wife were buried here. He had one daughter who married Aquilla England. This Cemetery was known then as the England -Cemetery. The land is now owned by Dave Scott. 24. England - Small - 4 miles N.W. of Sparta. D. S. England gave this land now owned by Tom Mason. 25. England - (Cloyd) - Small - 9 miles N.E. of Sparta in O'Conner Commun- ity. 26. Erwin - Small - One and onehalf miles N. of Bon Air. 27. Farris - Small - 4 miles N. E. of Sparta in Wild Cat Cove. 28. Fisher - Small - 10 miles W. of Sparta in Joppa. William Fisher gave land for this Cemetery about the year 1879. Land Now owned by Tom Fisher 29. Fisk - Small - In Wild Cat Cove Community. 30. Frally - Small - 9 miles N. W. of Sparta near Fancher';s Mill. 31. Frasier - Small - 12 miles S. of Sparta near Frasier Shapel. 32. Gist - Small - One half mile N. of Doyle on the Jerry Taylor farm. 33. Gleeson - Small - 8 miles S. of Sparta in Moore's Cove. 34. Haston - Small - 3 miles S. of Sparta in hickory Valley Community. 35. Herd - Small - 6 miles S. W. of Sparta. 36. Hickey - Small - 12 miles N. W. of Sparta near Burgess Falls. This is an old Cemetery,only a few graves here. There is one Civil War soldier by the name of Hickey buried here at whose grave the D.A.R. erected a monument. 37. Hickman - Large Cemetery - 7 miles N. of Sparta in Cherry Creek Com- munity. This is a very old Cemetery and the oldest grave is marked Judith Hickman born in Bedford, Va. , May 15, 1763. She died in White County, Nov. 25, 1816. Rev. Jessee Hickman & wife Susan J. are buried in this Cemetery. Rev. Jessee Hickman was the founder of Cumberland Institute. At one time students from seven different states attended this school. Rev. Hickman was noted for his great work as a minister. He was born Oct. 22, 1805 and died Dec. 26, 1888. Amos D. Hickman,and wife Mary J. hickman, parents of Jessee Hickman, are buried here. Sam. Weaver, Revolutionary Soldier, is buried here. 38. Hill - Large - 10 miles N.W. of Sparta in Shugart Community. 39. Hutchings - Small - 12 miles N. of Sparta near Fancher's Mill. 40. Hutson - Small - 7 miles W. of Sparta in Black Oak Community. "Uncle" Lewis Green, Civil War soldier,is burried here. 41. Jarvis - Small - 4 miles N.W. of Sparta in Wild Cat Cove. 42. Johnson - Small - 8 miles N. E. of Sparta in Johnson Town. This is the oldest Cemetery in this section and was started in 1797. 43. Kelly - Small - 2 miles E. of Baker's Cross Roads on the old Alexander Goodwin farm. Josh Hickey and his son are buried in this Cemetery. They were with a band of men who went to kill William Matlock for his money. Rebel Soldiers happened to come along and captured and killed all these men but Hickey and his son. They were followed to the foot of the Mountain where they were captured by Billie Hudgens. They were shot on a flat rock that is now in front of Jas. Fancher's house. Alexander Goodwin came for the bodies and took them to his house but was afraid to take them in the house so they were kept in the barn all night. He buried them the next day in this Cemetery. They were the first ones to be buried there. Before they were killed Hickey asked to be shot first so he wouldn't have to see his son die but they shot the son first and made him watch them. 44. Little - Small - 10 miles N. of Sparta on Wash Lee's farm. 47. Lowery - Small - 3 miles E. of Sparta at foot of Mountain. 48. Marsh & Bradley - Small - 7 miles N. of Sparta. 49. Mitchell - Small - 7 miles N. of Sparta on Cherry Creek. 50. Moore - Small - 13 miles S. W. of Sparta in Moore Cove. 51. McDale - Large - 10 iles N. of Sparta in Faucher's Mill Community. 52. McEwen - Small - 10 miles N.W. of Sparta near Faucher's Mill. In this Cemeteryis buried a sister of Gen. W. Tecumseh who led the famous march through Georgia. 53. Norris - Small - 16 miles W. of Sparta at Green Brier Bend. 54. Nowlin - Small - 3 miles W. of Sparta near Hobert Sims' Place. 55. Oakwood -Small - 7 miles N.W. of Sparta in Black Oak Community. A Mr. Oakwood gave the land for this Cemetery about 1905. He and his wife and two grandchildren are all that are buried here. The land is now owned by Jim Officer. 56. Pistole - Small - On Clint Gooche's farm 6 miles N. of Sparta. Two Pistole Brothers, who were Soldiers, are buried here. 57. Potts. Small - 4 miles N. E. of Sparta on the Jim Hennessee farm. This land was given for the Cemetery by Andy Potts about 1857, now owned by Hessesses. 58. Pandals - Small Cemetery N.W. of Doyle on the Dodson farm. 59. Ray - Small - 7 miles N.W. of Sparta near Bunker Hill. 60. Rodgers - Large - 4 miles S. of Sparta near Rodger's Store. 61. Savage - Small - 9 miles S. of Sparta. 62. Scott - Large - 8 miles N. He had a great many slaves and he first buried them in this Cemetery, alter, he gave land for the white people leaving the Negroes in one side. He and his wife are buried in this Cemetery. 23.
