WHITE COUNTY, TN - REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION - William Childress ----¤¤¤---- WILLIAM CHILDRESS: RECORD OF REVOLUTIONARY SERVICE William Childress's Revolutionary Service is given in his 1834 Pension Claim, R-1927, which is as follows: "The Record of William Childress is given herein as shown in the papers on file in Pension Claim R-1927, based upon his service in that War. William Childress was born December 25, 1762 in Buckingham County, Virginia; the names of his parents are not shown. His grandfather, William Vaughn, resided in Ninety Six District, South Carolina, during part of the Revolutionary War. William Childress, while a resident of Caswell County, North Carolina, enlisted in the year of the battle of Brier Creek, served six months as private in Captain William White's Company of North Carolina troops and was in the battle of Brier Creek. He then returned to Caswell County, North Carolina, for about ten months, then went to Ninety Six District, South Carolina to see his grandfather. He enlisted there, served as private in Captain John Ridgeway's company, Colonel Hayes' South Carolina regiment, also in the detachment under Colonel Washington and was engaged in the hard battle at Hammond's Store, and the following day, in the detachment which pursued the Tories to William's Plantation, where the enemy surrendered; he was then in the battle of Cowpens, marched afterwards to Guilford, North Carolina; length of these services two years. After the War, the soldier moved to Buckingham County, Virginia, from there back to Caswell County, North Carolina, thence to Ninety Six District, South Carolina, from there to Rutherford County, North Carolina, thence to Nadison County, Kentucky, and from there to White County, Tennessee. William Childress was allowed pension on his application executed July 16, 1833, at which time he resided in White County, Tennessee. The soldier died January 14, 1839. William Childress married July 28, 1784 in Buckingham County, Virginia, Charity, whose maiden name is not shown. In 1844, soldier's widow, Charity, was a resident of DeKalb County, Tennessee, aged 83 years; the date of her birth is not shown. In 1854, reference was made to Hiram Childress, the son of soldier.
