He was born Feb. 24, 1763 in St. David's Parish, South Carolina. He entered the service when he was 17 years of age when he resided in St. David's Parish, S. C. The State was afterwards laid out in Districts and St. David's Parish was called Darlington District. He served under Capt. William Standard, who was in Col. Abel Culp's regiment under Gen. Francis Marion. He enlisted again as a substitute for his step-father, John Flowers. He moved after the war to Marlborough District, S. C., where he lived for four months and then moved to Chesterfield, then to the hills of Santee, in Sumpter District, S. C. In 1827 he moved to White County, Tenn., where he died Nov. 23, 1838. His widow. Nancy Goodwin, aged 81 in 1853, so born 1772, applied for widow's pension. She was married March 6, 1800 in Darlington District, S. C., by Rev. Coleman, a baptist minister. Note: His widow, Nancy, was Nancy Carter before her marriage. She was David Goodwin's second wife. Among the children by the second wife was William, born Dec., 1809, died Jan., 1885, married Charity Linville, born 1802, died 1854.
