He was therefore born in 1756. He enlisted in the service in 1777 in Bedford County, Virginia, under Captain Downey. He substituted for Moses Johnson in Captain Isaac Wilson's company. He was associated with Colonel Evan Shelby, Colonel Charles Robertson and Captain John Sevier. He substituted for Adam Hall in Captain James Morrison's company, Colonel Phifer's regiment and served under Captain John Smith and Colonel Holmes in the battle of Ramsour's Mills and in the battle of King's Mountain.
