He was a cripple exempt from military duty. Nevertheless he volunteered as a spy in the service of General Joseph McDowell and was detailed to watch operations of British at Blackstocks. He was also commissioned to spy upon Major Patrick Ferguson near King's Mountain. Captain Barnett sent him to the camp of the British under General Floyd and Captain Huck. Note:- It is possible that James and Joseph Kerr were brothers as their service was similar and under the same officers.
