He was born October 24, 1757. While residing in Waxhaw Settlement, South Carolina, in 1776 he enlisted and served under Captain James Adams in a South Carolina regiment. In 1778 he served in Captain Montgomery's company, Colonel Joseph Kershaw's South Carolina regiment. He enlisted in May, 1780 in Captain Coffee's company, Colonel Kershaw's regiment and was in the battle of Rocky Mount. After the Revolution he lived in Camden District, S. C., until 1788 when he moved to Kentucky. He lived in Lincoln County, then in Mercer County eight or nine years and then moved to Tennessee, Williamson County, where he died April 13, 1838. He married March 9, 1780, Mary Taylor, born December 2, 1760. They were members of the "Congregation" in Waxhaw Settlement. Mary Taylor Guthrie survived the soldier and applied for widow's pension August 1, 1842, while she was residing in Henry County. Tennessee. She died January 5, 1845. She gave the names and dates of birth of the following children: Elizabeth Guthrie, 1783; William Ferguson Guthrie, 1785; James Guthrie, 1790; Robert Taylor Guthrie, 1793; David Houston Guthrie, 1796; Jacob Finley Guthrie, 1803. The birth of Adam Guthrie, October 1, 1769, is given in the pension paper but his relationship is not shown.
