He was born in 1762 in Frederick County, Virginia. While living in Newberry, South Carolina, he enlisted in 1776 in Captain Garrett Smith's South Carolina company. He enlisted again in 1777 in the company of Captain John Lindsay, his uncle. He enlisted in June or July, 1780, again in Captain John Lindsay's company, Colonel John Lyle's South Carolina regiment. He served in the battles of Musgrove's Mills, Fish Dam Ford, Blackstocks, and Cowpens. He was in the Siege of Ninety-six from which he went to the Siege of Augusta and while there he was in the battles of Fort Grierson and Eutaw Springs. He served until after peace was declared.
