He was then 60 years of age. He enlisted April 20, 1778 in Montgomery County, Maryland, for three years in Captain Griffith's company, Colonel Howard's 3rd Maryland regiment, General Smallwood's brigade. He also served in Captain William Wilmott's company under Colonels Ramsey and John Gunley. He was discharged in Camden, South Carolina. In his application he referred to his wife but gave no name, and to a daughter, aged 26 years but gave no name.
