All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/tn/tnfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Janet King JPerdue192@aol.com April 5, 2009, 5:00 pm Compensation For Lost Gun & Blanket State of Tennessee Wilson County I Beverly Williams, late a Captain of the second Regiment of Tennessee Mounted gun men commanded by Colonel Thomas Williamson, a part of General Coffee's Brigade, in the service of the United States on an expedition to New Orleans, do certify that during the said expedition, on the night of the twenty third december eighteen hundred & fourteen in an engagement with the British below New Orleans, Joshua Tipton, a private of my company lost his gun of the value of ten dollars and his blanket of the value of seven dollars, being compelled to abandon them by order of his commanding officier to assist the wounded off the field of battle and that I have never given any other certificate for the loss of said property. Sworn to & subscribed before me Edmond Crutcher B. Williams an acting justice of the peace for the county aforesaid the 25th day of November 1817 Edmund Crutcher J.P. Additional Comments: Joshua Tipton was born 1775 in Baltimore, MD to Jonathan Tipton & Elizabeth Ford. Jonathan Tipton was a soldier of the American Revolution. The family moved to Eastern Tennessee where Joshua married his wife Rachel Eagan in Washington Co., TN 1799. They moved to Wilson Co., TN a couple years after their marriage and resided on land along Little Cedar Creek. Joshua Tipton was 40yrs when he joined the 2nd Reg of Mounted Gunman under General John Coffee as a blacksmith. Coffee took his men to New Orleans where Andrew Jackson launched a night attack 23rd Dec 1814. Joshua Tipton lost his gun and blanket helping the wounded off the battle field. Jackson won the Battle of New Orleans on the 8th Jan 1815 and returned to his home outside Nashville, TN the 6 April 1815. Joshua Tipton died the 20 April 1815 still in service maybe of chlorea (?) (chlorea swept thru the troops during 1815).
