April 12, 1955 The First Census of Palestine (1848) The following census of Palestine taken in 1848 (when Palestine was only two years old and was a thriving town of 179 people) by Mrs. Susan S. Scott (Mallard) Alexander, wife of Judge Wm. Alexander. There is one mistake in addition, and listing of added persons not recorded by name throw the count into a little confusion; but apparently the census taker of 98 years ago counted up to 179, although the mistake in arithmetic gave them a total of 142 whites and 31 negroes. A recheck of the figures shows that the column of whites added up to 148 whites. The census shows: Family Name Negro White ----------------- -------- -------- Mallard 3 3 Twiggle 3 7 Reeves 1 4 Joost 3 5 McClure 2 4 Grigsby 0 4 DeBard 3 5 Jowers 4 4 Jasper 1 6 J. C. Ratcliffe 0 5 Mrs. White 0 3 Galloway 0 3 Fowler 1 5 J. Ratcliffe 0 3 -------- -------- 21 62 10 86 -------- -------- 31 142 (Above presented by Miss Ruth Eppner granddaughter of the census taker.)
