ANDERSON COUNTY POST OFFICES AND POSTMASTERS FROM 1846-1930 This listing provides the genealogical researcher with a list of all post offices, postmasters, and dates of operation for Anderson County during 1846-1930 period. This material was taken from two sources: "The Records of Appointments of Postmasters, 1846-1930," in the Civil Archives Division of the National Archives, and Grover Ramsey's "Confederate Postmasters of Texas," Waco, Texas, 1963. Researchers should note where more than one county is shown as the location for an office, this indicates a change in county boundary lines by the legislature. Exact dates are given for post offices shown to exist for less than one year. Researchers should remember the problems of compiling this list from original post office records. Illegible handwriting by postal clerks, missing pages, and faded or damaged entries sometimes confuse the researcher of today. One researcher notes that the dates of operation given by the Post Office Department "should not be considered an absolute limit for the period of existence of the office. It took time to deliver supplies to a new post office and most probably operation did not begin until days, weeks, or even months after the official date of establishment. It is possible that some began operation prior to their official date. Date of discontinuance may be even more uncertain. A post office could cease operation with the departure or death of the postmaster, and it may have been much later, after failure to find a replacement, that the office was officially reported closed." (This is from Colorado Postal History: the Post Offices, by William H. Bauer, James L. Ozment, and John H. Willard.) BIG NEWS ABOUT RESEARCH MATERIAL: For those of you who don't know about it, there exists a monumental work entitled Postmasters and Post Offices in Texas, 1846-1930. This study, compiled by one Jim Wheat, contains (1) a list of all 254 Texas counties, showing the post offices that have existed in each county; (2) an alphabetical list of all post offices that existed in Texas in those years, showing the dates of establishment and discontinuance for each; and (3) an alphabetical list of all persons who served as a postmaster at any Texas post office in those years. This work is undated and has unfortunately not been published. In manuscript form it is approximately 1,800 typewritten pages long. As far as presently known, it is available only on microfilm at the Baylor University Library in Waco, the Southwest Texas state University Library in San Marcos, and the State Archives in Austin.
