R. Palmer, J. W. Ozment, Jim Langston, T. E. Kersch, N. B. Barnes, Cyrus Helms, W. C. Foster, R. J. Royall, S. N. Pickens, C. A. Sterne, W. J. Averyt, N. S. Brooks, W. C. Larken, R. McClure, Sam Rollins, J. Y. Gooch. Since the organization W. C. Larkin, having moved, Jim Langston assumed his interest, and N. S. Brooks having withdrawn, H. B. Wilder assumed his interest and was taken as member. The organization was completed by the adoption of proper resolutions for government, and the election of J. P. Palmer, Pres. - R. McClure, Vice Pres., J. W. Ozment, Treas., J. Y. Gooch, Sec., and at the same time elected the following gentlemen as trustees: S. N. Pickens, R. J. Royall, Jim Langston, C. A. Sterne and N. B. Barnes. The object of the Association being to establish and maintain a school of high order, each member pledged his honor as a gentleman, for that object, and at the same time executed his individual obligation in a sufficient amount to secure to the teachers of the school the payment of their monthly salaries and the payment of all necessary expenses. By the terms of organization, tuition for each pupil is required to be paid monthly in advance to the Treas. of the Ass'n: and should there be a deficit from tuition to pay the salaries of teachers and necessary expenses, the Ass'n levies an assessment upon each member pro rata, sufficient to meet such deficit, and should the tuition collected afford an excess over the expenses as above, the same is to be invested in necessary apparatus or in improvements of the school property as may be most needed. Thus it will be seen that Palestine High School is not only upon a firm basis, but is also in the control of men who are determined to make it a permanent institution. In forming this Ass'n, it was not with the view of pecuniary benefit directly to the members, but viewing our town as prospering in every other respect, they were determined there should be such a school as was wanted and sufficient to supply the wants of the people of Eastern Texas. While the Ass'n returns their thanks to the patrons and friends for the generous support given them the last scholastic year, they respectfully ask that the citizens of Palestine and adjoining country lend their aid still further until the advantages of our school will be second to none in Texas. In making this request the Ass'n calls your attention to the many advantages of this place for a school. Palestine is the junction of two grand trunk railroads, is perfectly healthy, having no local cause for sickness whatever; with good, pure, freestone water. The citizens are liberal and enterprising, and society equal to any in Texas. Add to all these that the teachers are equal to any in Texas, being two gentlemen of long experience in teaching, energetic, industrious, trusty, in short every way worthy of the position they have, and who are in every respect qualified to preside over and control any institution of learning; if more are wanted, than we now have, none but the very best of teachers will be employed.
