HOOD’S TEXAS BRIGADE 1st Texas Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company G - Reagan Guards Company G, also known as the “Reagan Guards” was one of two Hood’s Texas Brigade companies from Anderson County. It was organized here and mustered into Confederate service “for the duration of the war” at Palestine, Texas June 23, 1861 by Capt. John R. Woodward, CSA. The information contained in this article was compiled from Hood’s Texas Brigade: A Compendium, Colonel Harold B. Simpson, and a Palestine Herald Press article of October 18, 1967. This newspaper article concerned a letter from C. V. Allin of Arlington, Texas whose grandfather, Phil T. Allin, was a soldier in Company G. The letter contained a muster roll taken from the memory of Wallace Watkins, Negro servant of Captain E. S. Jemison of the company. Mr. Allin wrote that his grandfather, Phil T. Allin, operated a ferry boat on the Neches River east of Palestine “where many slaves were brought from Louisiana to parts of Texas.” He also remembered as a small boy visiting the Confederate Home in Austin with his grandfather and hearing the veterans rehash their war experiences. His grandfather moved to Texas from Harrisburg, Kentucky and settled in the Palestine area. After returning from the war, he married Maggie Vannoy, who was from Kentucky, and they lived in Palestine where their son, Phil W. Allin was born. The family later moved to Cleburne in Johnson County where the grandfather served as district clerk for 16 years, and the father was mayor of Cleburne for 4 years. The following muster roll is from the Hood’s Texas Brigade book by Colonel Simpson. Following this is a muster roil of the same company by the Negro servant mentioned above. Many nicknames are used in the latter list. *denotes an original member of the company in the official muster roll below.
