TERRELL'S TEXAS CALVARY Company E The National Archives refers to Terrell's Texas Cavalry as the 37th Texas Calvary Regiment, however; the men of this regiment always referred to it as the 34th. It was one of the few remaining mounted regiments at the end of the war. The following roster is taken from the only known muster roll for this regiment which was taken on February 29, 1864. Palestine, Texas was the home of most of the men of Company E. It was organized on April 11, 1863 by Captain Reuben A. Reeves of Palestine. Near the end of the War, after fighting in Louisiana, they headed back to Texas where they made camp for the last time near Wildcat Bluff on the Trinity River in Anderson County. On May 14, 1865, they received word of Lee's surrender; the unit then disbanded and the men returned to their homes. Captain: REEVES, Ruben A., enlisted at Palestine on April 11, 1863. Resigned on September 28, 1864 by S.O. No. 264. He was elected associate justice of the Supreme Court of Texas in August of that year and resigned to take that position. Lieutenants: GUNNELS, Nathan C., enlisted at Palestine on April 11, 1863. Wounded, had arm broken in Battle of Mansfield or Pleasant Hill (LA) on April 8 or 9, 1864. Was on detached service with the horses at Fayetteville, TX on February 20, 1864.No further records was found when he filed for a pension on June 1, 1916. Appears on a prisoner of war roll at New Orleans, May 26, 1865. A private Connery of Co. E was reported as being wounded in the Battle of Mansfield or Pleasant Hill on April 8 or 9, 1864. Age, 25½, 5'5" tall, blue eyes, light complection, dark hair. Civilian occupation, farmer. Born in Lawrence County, Miss. Discharged December 23, 1864 at the general hospital in Houston because of a fracture of the lower part of the tibia and other injuries. Injuries occurred November 26, 1863. HELMS, Cyrus, enlisted at Palestine on April 11, 183. Absent, sick at Hempstead, TX since January 1, 1864. HEMBY, John, enlisted at Palestine on August 25, 1863.
