DAVIS LOCAL EDITOR & CAPITALIST, ONE OF CITY 'S EARLIEST NATIVE SUCCUMBS. February 13, 1936 Tom Scott DAVIS, 84 tears, 11 months and 13 days, said to be Palestine oldest living native, died at his home, 1102 North Sycamore Street at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, after a brief illness. Death was attributed to infirmities of old age. Mr. Davis whose motto was "Never buy anything unless you can pay cash for it" is the owner of numerous business properties in Palestine and Elkhart and formerly owned other business houses in Oakwood. He accumulated the properties through savings from a modest salary of $50. Per month during 23 years that he worked as a pumper for the International Great Northern Railroad and from wise investments and trades. Davis is believed to have been the first white man born in what is now the city limits of Palestine. At the time of his death, Mr. Davis was the owner of the White House Cafe building and fixtures on Spring Street, The Dublin Market Building, H. C. Williams Grocery Building, The Courthouse Drug Building, all located on the West side of the Courthouse Square...... Tom S. Davis was born in a house, which has long since disappeared and which was located on East Lacy Street...... As a boy, he assisted his father, Randle Davis, pioneer house painter in painting some of the first residences and businesses on Palestine.... Mrs. Luella Davis, who has been her husband's faithful companion for 61 years, was reported ill of heart trouble Wednesday night and will be unable to attend the funeral.... Survivors are two sons, DR. W. E. Davis of Elkhart and Charles O. Davis, Old Town merchant; One daughter, Mrs. DR. E. B. Stokes of Crockett, a half sister, Mrs. Jim Stevens of Palestine....
