Walter DAVIS, about 35, milker and helper on the Carl Naehritz dairy farm, a mile north of Palestine, who had been questioned in connection with theft of chickens from Naehritz hen house, apparently tied a hangman's knot around his neck with a lariat rope and strangled to death hanging from a huge red oak tree 400 yards east of the dairy barn...... Scrawled in pencil on a piece of pink paper, a note found in the Negro's pocket, indicated he had taken his life to escape possible persecution. The note read in part " I have told the trueth (sic) every time I was asked for it, so I am writing willing to die on the truth."......
