The Old Runnels Cemetery once located in Angelina County was one of several that was relocated due to the building of the Sam Rayburn Dam and Lake by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the years of 1959-1960. This cemetery is now located in San Augustine County and is often called the New Runnels Cemetery.
