Braley, who's served as justice of the peace at Medina the last 21 years, figures no one ever came pioneering to Texas at an earlier age than he did. He says, "I was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1872. By the time of was one year old, I go tired of the place and moved to Texas and brought my parents along with me". Still spry and full of quaint humor at 81 years, Braley was a visitor last week, and, over a cup of coffee at the Cathay house, talked fondly about his colorful life. He's lived in several Texas localities, including Kimball (sic) county, where as a youth he broke wild horses. In later years he roamed the far west. Braley likes to tell about his wife, a native of Medina who lost her left leg at the age of 11. Her maiden name was Emma Jane Sutherland. Braley says: "She's 88 years old and still does all of her housework and cooking. She uses a wood stove because grub tastes better when cooked with a wood fire." By grub, Braley means "pinto beans, turnip greens, sowbelly and onions and fresh peach cobbler." He drinks buttermilk. Braley says: "Milking and chopping wood are two things I can't stand to see my wife doing. I go into the house and shut the door."
