Included are all businesses in Bastrop and surrounding areas, although businesses in locales some distance away (Galveston, for example) were excluded. The list also includes those businesses that were referred to within articles, even though no advertisement appeared. In addition, often at the beginning of the next year, the paper published the Financial Report of Bastrop County for the year just ended. This report itemized all occupational taxes assessed and received. These "occupations" are reflected in the reconstructed Business Directory, although sometimes the "occupation" leaves one wishing for more information. For example, someone's tax assessment may be listed only as "4th class merchant." We might wish to know what kind of merchant a 4th class merchant was, but unless this merchant also purchased advertising, we are left guessing. In addition, the "occupational tax" list did not list in which specific town or location the business operated. All we can know is that it operated somewhere in Bastrop County. The date the advertisement, reference, or tax list first appeared is listed at the end of the entry, in the event that the researcher might wish to obtain a copy of the notice. That is, the ad would have appeared at least on that one date listed. Often the same or similar ad appeared in subsequent issues, but these dates beyond the ad’s first appearance are not listed. Old advertisements are always intriguing, sometimes amusing, and will provide a much more interesting and informative description of the business than this list, in its brevity, can provide. Goods and services offered, their prices, even how a merchant "worded" his advertisement, can sometimes assist the researcher in gaining a fuller picture of these early business men and women. The lists are generally organized by year, then surname (i.e., business owner or worker), as opposed to the name of the business (although sometimes they are one and the same). Since this Business Directory is reconstructed from surviving issues of the newspaper, surely some businesses that operated during this time frame have been excluded. To the spirits of these business owners and their descendants, we salute, too, your life’s work. 1854 (All entries from the 27 May 1854 paper) ARMINGTON, B. See JONES & ARMINGTON.
