Swindells 17 December 1823 18 December 1905 Dr. James H. Swindells was born in Virginia/New Jersey and his wife, Ellen P. [Brotherton] Swindells was born in Ohio, according to the census. Joseph Carroll McConnell in his book, "The West Texas Frontier" makes mention of James H. Swindells, who on 24 April 1858, received a contract to deliver mail from Stephensville, Erath County, TX to a little place known as Birmingham on Palo Pinto Creek about one and a half miles north of the present town of Gordon, then to Palo Pinto, and Mesquiteville[Jacksboro] and back, once a week. The contract expired 6 January 1851. Dr. J.H. Swindells and his family were living at Fort Belknap, Young County, Texas by 1856. J.H. Swindells was the first County Surveyor for Young County. District Surveyor TX Fort Belknap was decommissioned in 1859. Fort Belknap and the surrounding area became a dangerous place for settlers due to Indian depredations. Dr. J.H. Swindells and his family moved to Lancaster, Texas by 1862. Andrew Taylor, born 1837 in Greene Co., IL married Mary "Mollie" E. Swindells, on 27 October 1868 in Dallas County, TX. She was the daughter of Dr. James H. Swindells and wife, Ellen P. Swindells, with his wife and family move to Seymour, Baylor County, Texas before 1880. J.H. Swindell's wife, Ellen P. [Brotherton] Swindells dies at Seymour, Baylor County, TX in 1895. By 1900, J.H. Swindells is living at Seymour with his widowed daughter, Mary E.
