FOOTSTONES BUT NO HEADSTONES OR DATES R. A. B. V. D. FIELDSTONE WITH CRUDE MARKINGS Chatham, Gay 1900 OTHER OBSERVATIONS A number of gravestones are fragmented and/or displaced. Some field- stones without inscriptions are placed perpendicular to the ground and could be grave markers. There is one small metal post similar to those placed with a name card by funeral homes that apparently marks a grave location. At three different areas in the cemetery are remnants of fences constructed of cut frees and barbed wire. Square cut nails are visible in the fence posts. It appears that at sometime in the past these fences enclosed grave sites; however, no gravestones are found in these areas today. One very large slab of smoothly finished concrete marks an unnamed grave. There are depressions of graves size at several locations in the cemetery. It could be that some bodies have been moved. The grave marker for Mary Woodruff is polished granite and not of the same age as the other stones. The earliest burial dates recorded are 1860 for T. B. Crawford (this is a single stone with two names and must have been placed at the time of death of Marshal Crawford) and 1863 for William Goode. The most re- cent burials based on information from existing tombstones were 1900 (S. E. Porter also Gay Chatham - 1900) and 1907 (E. R. Pedigo). The earliest birth dates are 1803 (Marshal Crawford) and 1808 (Elizabeth Carpenter). The largest and most ornate marker is that of the Freeman family It was placed prior to the death of the three Freeman sons whose burial plots are marked with simple stones marked with the initials only. Their names and birth dates are on the large marker. The Carpenter graves are prominently marked within an iron fence at the Southeast corner of the cemetery which is located on property owned by the Carpenters and set aside as a Community burial place. The White- hurst monument (toppled and fragmented) was prominently placed at the Northwest corner. Several Tombstones are inscribed with verse and one (Goode) with a Masonic emblem. The Roller marker indicates that he served the Con- federacy (Co. B, lst ALA Cav) during the Civil War. Several stones were carved with decoration, such clasped hands and a dove. All grave stones in Eulogy Cemetery have been recorded as inscribed and located on an aerial photograph (Scale 1" = 100 feet) of the area. FURNISHED BY: Mr. E. A.
