SUBMITTER: Polly Peaks-Elmore List Included In: Bell County Cemeteries, Polly Peaks-Elmore, compiler, 1996. Used by permission. The Lancaster Cemetery was established in 1855 - 1859, by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hamilton Lancaster. The reason for this date is Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster bought the land on 9 July 1855 and the last people killed by Indians in Bell County, Texas, was the Riggs family on 16 March 1859. Since the exact date is not known of the killing, by the Indians of the little girl that is buried in the Lancaster Cemetery, we know it had to be in this time period. Mr. Thomas Hamilton and Caldonia P. (Coleman) Lancaster bought 250 acre tract of land on 9 July 1855 from Mr. Davis, it being a part of the Maximo Moreno 11 League Grant. Thomas Hamilton Lancaster died 5 April 1867 leaving 155 acre tract of this land to his son James H. Lancaster, including the one acre for the cemetery. On 31 March 1886, James and his wife Alberta Lancaster sold this 155 acre tract of land to his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Minnard H. Gilliam, this sale included the one acre cemetery. On 9 November 1899, Mr. and Mrs. Minnard H. Gilliam sold 154 acre tract of land out of the 155 acre land to Mr. A. P. Garrett. Mr. and Mrs. Minnard H. Gilliam expressly reserved the one acre of land as a LANCASTER BURYING GROUND. This information is recorded in the Belton, Texas, Court House in Deed book 135, Page 80. The Lancaster Cemetery is located on the east side of Temple, Texas, it being annexed in 1977, when the City of Temple annexed 6,000 acres of land. The first grave is located in the center of the cemetery and is marked with a large stone and a head stone made by Felix F. Lancaster. Mrs. Elender A. (Burns) Lancaster stated the first grave was a child killed by Indians. This is a proven fact by the data complied by Mrs. Ramage, a well known genealogist in the local area. Mrs. J. T. Ramage, now deceased, was the grand- daughter of Thomas Hamilton and Caldonia (Coleman) Lancaster. The Thomas Lancasters donated the land for the cemetery so the family would have a place to bury their child. The men made the coffin from lumber they could gather in the neighborhood. The women line the coffin and made the clothes for the child to be buried in. The men did not have modern-day tools to dig the grave, so apparently the grave was not dug very deep and the large stone was carved and placed over the grave in order to keep the wild animals away from the body. Friends and relatives of people buried in the cemetery tried to keep the cemetery clean, but with passing of time and deaths of the older generation, it looked like the weeds and briars would claim the cemet- ery. In 1977, a group of relatives undertook the big task of cleaning and keeping the cemetery. With the work of cleaning, the addition of a chain-link fence, an new sign for the gate and two graveled roads in the cemetery, and one of the Officers and Board of Director,Felix F. Lancaster, making 29 Markers to mark unmarked graves, it is a nice little cemetery today. With the passing of time, some of the elderly people lost or destroyed the deed to the cemetery, with the help of a local lawyer, Mr. Jim Bowmer, and the help and work of Mr. William Dale Yates, we now have a title to the Lancaster Cemetery. You will notice it is a non-profit organization. On 6 August 1984, we obtained the title to the cemetery, and it is registered in Austin, Texas as the "Rural Cemetery of Bell County" It is registered at Belton, Texas, Deed book 2148, Page 459, Ex Porte and Dedication, Deed book, Page 541. There was another Lancaster Cemetery in the State of Texas; therefore, we could not use the name Lancaster Cemetery in Austin, Texas, but with the legal change in Belton, Texas it is permissible to use the name Lancaster Cemetery in Bell County, Texas, and on all our papers and our marker. We do not sell lots, the relatives of Thomas Hamilton and Caldonia Lancaster are the ones permitted to bury in the cemetery. There are a few people buried in the cemetery not related to Thomas Lancaster, but they were close friends, and were permitted to bury there. We have had the cemetery surveyed by Mr. Frank Martin, Jr. a Register- ed Public Surveyor, as you will notice it is 0.926 acre. This was caused by trees being in the way of the surveyor and the chain-link fence.
