Mudd one-third of a league of land. This land grant being in Milam County on the Lampasas Creek (sic). This area was soon to be known as Bell County. Bell County was cut out of Milam County in January 22, 1850. In 1851, Francis L. Mudd sold this par- cel of land to Michael Young for $1,000.00(1). Live Oak Cemetery is located in the Youngsport community. The size of the cemetery is 3.9 acres(2). According to legend, the Young family was passing through the country with a wagon train when their small daughter became sick and died. The wagon train that Michael Young traveled arrived in the area before Bell County was cut out of Milan County. The Youngs buried their daughter where they camped and decid- ed to settle on the Lampasas River. Young was known to say that he had found his "port". The camping site became known as Youngsport. The Youngs were from Alabama traveling in a wagon train when illness struck their daughter. Several other families decided to remain with Michael Young and his family(3) . Michael Young's grave is the oldest internment in the Live Oak Cemetery. His daughter's grave could be any one of the unmarked graves that were cataloged. Mr. P. C. Mitchell sold the land for a cemetery for consideration of $58.00 dollars to W. C. Turnbo, J. B. Stringer and J. D. House as trustees for the grave yard(4). Youngsport was a thriving village atleast as early as 1871 as that is the date the first Post Master was appointed to serve Youngsport, Texas. The Post Office was manned for more than 59 years from 08/07/1871 to 11/15/1930 when it was discont- inued and mail was sent to Killeen, Texas (Killeen was settled in 1882). Four years before the first interment of Michael Young (1875), the first Post Master was appointed in Youngsport, Texas (1871). There are several Post Masters buried in the Live Oak Cemetery. The former Post Masters interned in Live Oak Cemetery were: Jay F. Beach (1819 - 1894), appointed as Post Master on 9/11/1871. Jacob C. Wright, Post Master 04/14/1893, is belived to be J. C. Wright whose headstone is not readable. William David Craig (1878 - 1953), was appointed as Post Master on 11/17/1916. Myrtle I. Ellis (1897-1953), served as Post Master from 10/14/1925 until the Post Office was discontinued November 15, 1930,and mail sent to the Killeen Post Office(5). Live Oak Cemetery is at least 115 years old. To date there are 435 marked and unmarked graves in Live Oak Cemetery. The oldest grave being that of Michael Young (1801 - 1875). The next two internments were Andrew Jackson Turnbo (1823 -1876) and Milly Cosper (1807 - 1876). There are a total of 26 graves with babies being born and died the same year(6). It is said by the Youngsport residents that the cemetery was named Live Oak because there were so many live oak trees within the grave yard. There is only one live oak tree, with several trunks, remaining within the cemetery grounds today. Live Oak Cemetery is one of two cemeteries located in the Youngsport community. The other cemetery is Boone-Hamlin Cemetery. It is most unusual for a community that has never been incorporated to have two large cemeteries that are still growing(7). It was superstition in the community to not let a dug grave lay over-night. It was alright to begin to dig the grave the day before as long as the grave was not finished(8). It was common practice in the nineteenth century for friends to dig graves as there were no businesses that provided that service. The Deceased member would be kept at home, many times on a cooling board in front of a window, until after the services which were held in the homes and taken directly to the grave yard for burial. The current slate of officers at this writing are: Glen Collins, President Bill Brown, Vice President Dee Gibbs, Secretary Desiree Holmes, Treasurer Trustees are: Delores (Tootie) Innman Joel Hubard Slawson John Mac Holmes Live Oak Cemetery Organizational Presidents were: 84 - 86 Mofford Ray 86 - 89 Lavern Holmes 89 Edmond Ray, 2 months only 89 - 90 Bill Brown 90 - 93 Glen Collins. If there were earlier Presidents for the Cemetery Organization, there apparently no records that were kept. Members of the Cemetery Organization are of the opinion that the Deed found in Book 916, Pages 524 and 525, came about because the Corps of Engineers requested permission to bury some unidentified graves in LiveOak when Stillhouse Hollow Lake took the area that Cedar Knob Cemetery was in. The Deed is not specific enough to determine that from read- ing the document(9). FOOTNOTES 1. Patent, January 9, 1846, Book 65, Page 569, Bell County Court House, Belton, Texas.
