Bell County, Texas - Cemetery: Old Oenaville Cemetery This old cemetery is located on the HAGGARD-VAUGHAN Farm about 1/2 mile north of Oenaville, Texas on the right hand side of Farm Rd. #438 to Temple. David HAGGARD owns the farm (1968), and his late wife and his sister-in-law some years ago copied the old cemetery, which is thickly, overgrown with vines and weeds. It is on the right hand side of the road leading to Mr. HAGGARD's home several hundred yards south of the fence. MRS. HAGGARD & MRS. KLEMANN copied only graves recording deaths previous to 1901. Thanksgiving Day of 1966 Mrs. Louis C. Hill attempted to copy the cemetery, which proved to be a most difficult job. On November 23, 1968 Mr. & Mrs. John T. MARTIN also tried to copy it but had little success. It is the oldest cemetery in the area and was the earliest used by the once flourishing town of Oenaville. (Graves marked * were located by Mr. & Mrs. MARTIN; the others were no longer visible in the dense growth which made walking dangerous) NOTE: A good many graves listed by Mrs. KLEMANN were found in the public (new) cemetery in town. Perhaps they were moved, or were confused in the listings. At any rate, they are marked ** and repeated in the new cemetery listing where they were located on November 23, 1968 by Mr. & Mrs. John Truman MARTIN. Cows have knocked over or broken all but 3 of the stones, which are covered with periwinkle. Many stones are buried, in this old cemetery. =========================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, material may be freely used by noncommercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material, AND permission is obtained from the contributor of the file.
