Tuck DAVIDSON, S. G., Captain - On the 30th, at Fort Chadron, a scout, consisting of two detachments, 20 and 30 men respectively, under the commands of Lt. R. Cotter, and Capt. Davidson, and both under Lt. Col. Frost, Col. McCulloch's mounted regiment, C.S.A., returned from a 20 days scout. A letter in the State Gazette says: On the morning of the 23rd, near the head waters of the Colorado, the party stuck a fresh trail, which they followed, and after pursuing it several miles, they came in sight of seven red skins. They charged the Indians and after a chase of five miles, a part of the scouts were amongst them. The fight lasted about fifteen minutes, and resulted in the death of Capt. S. G. Davidson, commander of company H, _Belton, and Andrew J. McCarry, an excellent young man from Lockhart. The rest of the Indians fell in the engagement, and one was badly wounded. (Galveston Weekly News, July 23, 1861) Later reported - Capt. S. G. Davidson, of Bell county, being in the advance of his division, he charged upon three Indians whom he saw in the rear of the main party. When they saw him coming, they dismounted, and stepping a few paces apart, awaited his approach, and as he rode after and among them, discharging his six shooter, they shot him with three arrows.
