The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. *********************************************************************** Submitted by: Rayedene May 23, 2001 ======================================================================= Temple Daily Telegram Tuesday morning June 1 1920 (front page) ENGINE ROD KILLS TEMPLE BRAKEMAN S H Fritz victim of peculiar accident near Milano SH Fritz, brakeman, was instantly killed yesterday when struck in the head by some part of the connecting rod or piston of a Santa Fe engine, while attempting to sand the rails on a siding at Elevation, five miles south of Milano. Extra 3147, north, took the siding at Elevation for passenger train No 6 yesterday afternoon about 1:25. The engine apparently began slipping when going in on the siding and Brakeman Fritz, while attempting to hammer the sand pipe to assist in getting sand on the rail, is though to have lost his balance about the time the engine gained headway and was struck by either the connecting rod or piston rod with instantly fatal results. The body was brought to Temple on No 6. Mr. Fritz is survived by a wife, mother, one brother and six sisters, all of whom will be present for the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Graves, the latter a sister of the deceased, were expected to arrive from Silsbee, Tex., last night. The funeral services will be conducted from the family residence, 1014 West Central Avenue, this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by Rev Parker of Belton. The pallbearers are: Active-J.C. Gilley, L Patterson, Will Booley, John Durden, John Power and Jim Cargile. The honorary pallbearers will be composed of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen of which he was a member. The brotherhood will have charge of the service at the cemetery. Interment will be at the City Cemetery.
