Sweeney, age 21, of San Antonio, died Sunday, September 4, 1983, after a ten month fight with cancer. A 1989 graduate of Madison High School, Sweeney believed everyone was deserving of a second chance. He always thought no one should be unhappy when they died because you received a second chance when you did and couldn't think of anyone going anyplace but "Heaven". He discovered that he had cancer while attending New York University. He decided to return to San Antonio to be with his family and for treatment at Medical Center Hospital. He had been healthy all his life and kept in good physical condition. From the time he was in elementary school he loved running track. He would run the 50 yard dash and the 440 relay. In his junior high school days, Sweeney won several awards and ribbons for his running. A private person, Sweeney kept things to himself and seldom discussed his problems with other people. He was a very graceful person. He chose his friends carefully and did not open up to other people but he was a good listener. He was a sensitive person who became aware of certain religious aspects when he went into the hospital. He read the bible and tried to gain strength from its teachings. During his illness he became very close to his family and drew a great deal of strength from his parents. Sweeney is survived by his parents, William and Anna Sweeney, brothers; Dieter Sweeney, John Sweeney, Michael Sweeney and Grandmother Ruth DeFee Mathews, all of San Antonio. There are other numerous relatives in Michigan and Germany. In accordance with Mr.Sweeney's wishes, inurnment of his cremains will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 1983 in Sunset Memorial Park, Mausoleum No.2. Arrangements with Sunset Funeral Home. Contributor is Patrick's father. Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: William Sweeney zeitwanderer@earthlink.net
