(Wife and children below) From the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS - Jul 29 1979: Living Decendants of the Peyton Colony still live on land that Peyton Roberts settled with 8 other families freed more than 100 years ago. At first there were 600 acres but the land grew into 6,000 acres as freed slaves traveled to the Peyton Colony. Peyton was first owned by Jeremiah Roberts, who came from England in 1645 to America. Jeremiah Roberts gave Peyton to one of his sons who in turn passed the gift slave on to William Roberts, a grandson, who freed Peyton along with 8 other families in 1836. Left with no help, Roberts persuaded his former slaves to continue working for him until 1865. He then worked with the US Government to find land for the former slaves. The fred slaves traveled by oxcart for many months before they reached the land which was to be home for them and their descendants. Note: A.
