For Use of Widows of Soldiers Who are in Indigent Circumstances The State of TEXAS, County of: BOSQUE I, Mrs. M.A. NICHOLS, do hereby make application to the Commission of Pensions for a pension, to be granted me under the Act passed by the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved March 26, 1909, on the following grounds: I have not remarried since the death of my said husband, and I do solomnly swear that I was never divorced from my said husband, and that I never voluntarily abandoned him during his life, but remained his true, faithful and lawful wife up to the date of his death. I was married to him on the 13th day of November, A.D. 1871, in the county of LEE, in the State of TEXAS. My husband, the said SOLOMON M. NICHOLS, enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States...... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How long have you resided in the county of your present residence? And what is your postoffice address? Answer: One year - My P.O. is Valley Mills, Texas. Q. What was your husband's full name? Answer: SOLOMON MANGUM NICHOLS Q. When and where were you married: Answer: Nov. 13, 1871 in Lee Co., Texas Q. What was the date of his death? Answer: July 5, 1890 Q. In what State was your husband's command originally organized? Answer: Texas Q. How long did your husband serve? If known to you, give date of enlistment and discharge. Answer: 4 years. From the beginning of the war to its close. Q. What was the name or letter of the company, or name or number of the battalion, regiment or battery of artillery in which your `husband served? If he was transferred from one branch of service to another, give time of transfer, description of command and time of service. Answer: Co. I, Flournoy's Regt. Texas Vol. Infantry. I do not know if he was ever transferred. Q. Name branch of service in which your husband served, whether infantry, calvary, artillery or the navy, or if commissioned as an officer by the President, his rank and line of duty, or if detailed for special service, under the law of conscription, the nature of such service, and time of service. Answer: Infantry, Private soldier Q. Have you transferred to others any property of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under this law? Age, place of residence? Answer: CAMPBELL DOTSON, age 67, Coats, Taylor Co., Texas. I personally knew him about 3 or 4 years before the war in Burleson Co., Texas, and knew him when he joined this Co. and I afterwards joined the same company. He was the only S.M. Nicholas who was in that company. 2. Did you know Solomon Mangum Nichols? Answer: Yes 3. How long did you know Solomon Mangum Nichols? Answer: Knew him before the war, during the war, and after the war in Burleson Co., Texas. 4. Do you personally know that the said S.M. Nichols enlisted in the Confederacy and performed the duties of a soldier or a sailor? Answer: Yes. He served until the close and was honorably discharged. He never deserted or abandoned his post of duty. 5. Do you personally know in what company and regiment the said S.M. NIchols enlisted or served in the Confederate army? When? Where? And the time of service? If you personally knew and so have stated that he enlisted and served in the Confederate navy, then state: When? Where? And how long he so served? Answer: 5th, yes. In Co. B. 16th Texas Infantry. He had been in the Army about one month before I joined. I joined the same Company and Regiment he belonged too, and he served until the close of the war. 6. Do you personally know that S.M. Nichols was ocmmissioned as an officer directly by the President of the Confederate States? What was his rank and line of duty? Answer: He was a private 7. Do you further know if S.M. Nichols was, under the provisions of the conscript law, detailed for any kind of special service in the field, shops, armories, etc., of the Confederacy? What was the nature of his service, and how long did he serve? Answer: No. Affidavit of Witness Witness #2: JAMES BATES 1. Age, place of residence: Answer: JAMES M. BATES, 66 years, Caldwell, Texas. About 2 years before the close of the war I was transferred to the 16th Texas and found said S.M. Nichols in that Regiment and I served with him until the close of the war. I knew no other soldier by name of S.M. Nichols. 2. Did you know Solomon Mangum Nichols? Answer: Yes. 3. How long did you know Solomon Mangum Nichols? Answer: Knew him during war and until his death. He was still in the service when I was discharged in February 1865 and I feel sure he wserved and was honorably discharged. 4. Do you personally know that the said S.M. Nichols enlisted in the Confederacy and performed the duties of a soldier or a sailor? Answer: Yes. He was a good soldier and allways at his post and feel sure he never deserted. 5. Do you personally know in what company and regiment the said S.M. NIchols enlisted or served in the Confederate army? When? Where? And the time of service? If you personally knew and so have stated that he enlisted and served in the Confederate navy, then state: When? Where? And how long he so served? Answer: Yes. Co. B. 16th Texas Infantry.
