Submitted by: Jean Old - j.old@att.net *********************************************************************** NEW BOSTON HOME TO LARGEST GINKO TREE IN TEXAS The Texas Forest Service has certified a Bowie County tree as the largest known specimen of its species in the State of Texas. The new champion is a Ginko tree, whose scientific name is Ginko Biloba. The Ginko Tree is owned by Willie Mae Morris of New Boston and was nominated by Mark Elrod, forest technician with the Texas Forest Service. Morris was presented with a certificate as the owner of the largest known tree specimen of its kind in Texas. Elrod also received a certificate for nominating the tree. The new champion dethroned the previous one in Smith County, which had held the title since 1990. The champion tree program uses measurements of uses measurements of tree height, trunk circumference and average crown spread to calculate index values for nominated trees. The tree with the largest index value of those nominated claims the championship crown. The new Ginko champion has a trunk circumference of 157 inches, a height of 64 feet and an average crown spread of 72 feet, giving it an index value of 239 points, 59 points more than the tree it dethrones in Tyler. A dedication cermony will be held at a later date.
