Gloria B. Mayfield, LadyTexian@tcainternet.com  TX Tombstone Project Manager Submitted by Vicki Richards GVRICHARDS@aol.com ************************************************************************ How Texarkana Got Its Name The most popular version in that the name Texarkana was coined from the adjoining states of TEXas, ARKansas, and LouisiANA. It is not known officially who gave Texarkana its name for several persons have contended for this honor, but the name is thought to have been in use before the founding of Texarkana on 8th of December, 1873, when the first town lots were sold by the Texas and Pacific Railroad. One legend is that a steamboat named Texarkana plied the Red River, between Shreveport, LA, and Fulton, AR., before the Civil War touching the three states. Another is that Josiah W. Fort in 1849 nailed a board to a post on his property (about 1 and 1/2 miles north) with the word TEXARKANA painted on it. Also, Col. C. M. Hervey nailed a board with TEXARKANA on it to a tree on his plantation along the Red River. A story goes that a Mr. Swindle from Bossier Parish, Louisiana, had a store at Red River Land, (near present day Plain Dealing) and that he concocted the name Texarkana Bitters for a tonic he sold in the three states area as early as 1869-70.
