On Dec. 8, 1851 the 45h Legislature of Texas granted a charter for the establishment of the Milan Masonic Female Institute at Boston, and in 1860 Professor W. M. Featherstone of Virginia established and conducted a high school there. These two schools became outstanding in Northeast Texas and attracted students from several adjoining counties. Both were boarding schools and many of the prominent families sent their daughters to Milam Institute and their sons and daughters to Featherstone Academy. Tuition was reasonable usually amounting to $3.00 per month and board could be obtained at $15.00 per month. Bills were rendered twice a year and these bills were itemized in every detail. After Featherstone we find the following among the names of the teachers of Old Boston: Green Dalby, Mrs Buckner, mother of the founder of Buckners Orphans Home. Mrs. Williams, Miss Moss, later Mrs. Berry, Miss Fannie Lindsay, Miss Ermma Peters and Miss Dix Bush. ************************************************************************ USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
