Descendant of Elias Fort, William Whitfield, Capt. Joseph Ligon, Joseph Ligon, Jr. Daughter of Joseph Marstain Fort and Jack Ann Fort, his wife. Granddaughter of Josiah W. Fort and Diana Coleman Ligon (1797-1855), his wife; John Degge Fort and Miriam Whitfield (1808-88), his wife (parents of Ann). Gr.-granddaughter of William Fort (father of Josiah) and Elizabeth Hilliard, his wife; Joseph Ligon, Jr. and Diana Coleman Clay, his wife; Sugg Fort and Elizabeth Degge, his wife (parents of John); Needham Whitfield and Miriam Neville, his wife. Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of Elias Fort and Sarah Sugg, his wife; Joseph Ligon and Judith, his wife; William Whitfield and Hester Williams, his wife. Elias Fort, (1730-1819), served as a private in the North Carolina Line. He was born in Edgecomb Co., N. C.; died in Robertson Co., Tenn. William Whitfield, (1748-1817), served as commissary in the North Carolina militia. Joseph Ligon entered the army, 1775, as lieutenant of Halifax Co., and 1777, was promoted captain of Virginia militia. Joseph Ligon, Jr., was at the battle of Guilford Court House, where as ensign, he was wounded. He was placed on the invalid pension roll of Halifax Co., Va., 1807, and was transferred to Montgomery Co., Tenn., where he was a pensioner in 1833, as a private in the Virginia Line.
