OBITUARY HENRY AUGUSTUS ALLEN, II Pulaski County, Little Rock, Arkansas April 10, 1920 to Nov. 18, 2000 HENRY AUGUSTUS ALLEN, SR., 80, of Little Rock, AR, owner of Allen Granite Industries, Inc. passed away Saturday, November 18, 2000, after a 4-1/2 year illness and complications from an automobile accident in May 1996. He was born April 10, 1920, in Texarkana, Texas. He was raised in Texarkana and El Dorado, graduating from El Dorado High School in 1938, prior to the family’s return to Texarkana. He served his country as a Naval Officer during WWII. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business. After graduating from there with honors, he attended the MBA Program at Harvard Graduate School of Business. While attending the University of Pennsylvania, he served as President of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In 1947, he moved with his wife and son to New York City, where he worked in marketing and sales for 10 years. In 1957, he returned to Arkansas, continuing work as a manufacturer’s rep and acquiring part ownership in Allen Monument Works, Inc., a business established in 1937 by his uncle Seab Allen, Sr. During the ensuing 30 years, he and his business partner, cousin, and close friend, Charles “Seab” Allen, Jr., manufactured and distributed granite and marble memorials throughout Arkansas and the surrounding states. He was very proud of the fact that many of the war memorials honoring our nation’s heroes (in town squares throughout the state and neighboring states), were designed and/or manufactured by Allen Monument Works (renamed Allen Granite Industries, Inc. upon his partner’s retirement in 1985). The company most recently participated in the manufacture of the Viet Nam War Memorial and the congressional Medal of Honor memorial on the Arkansas State Capitol grounds. He was a member since 1957 of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church and a member of the Country Club of Little Rock for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris Uhrig Allen, Sr. and Jewell Connell Allen, and a sister, Elizabeth Allen Young of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Mary Grace Longenecker Allen (of Annville, Pennsylvania); two children Henry Augustus “Gus” Allen, Jr. of Little Rock and Gail Elizabeth Allen of New York, NY and recently of Little Rock; two grandchildren Jack and Jamie; two brothers and a sister, Morris Allen, Jr., James Allen and Elda Thomas of Texarkana; and 10 nieces and nephews.
