Saturday afternoon, as he battled for his life under an oxygen tent, the boy asked his mother to make a trip to town and purchase a gift for him so that he might give it to his father Sunday, the Congressman's birthday. Mrs. Patman bought the gift and slipped it into the room when Patman was out. Charles hid it beneath his pillow, waiting for the morrow so that he might wish his father a happy birthday and hand him the present. During the night the lad became unconscious and shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday he died, his father's present still beneath his pillow.
