About two o’clock yesterday morning, information was received that suspicious persons were seen in Conductor Gate’s yard to which place Bramble and Ward repaired and sent for the officials, they met at the engine house and there agreed upon a plan to surround the block. As Officer Sweeny passed the residence of Mr. Latimer he discovered the gate open, passed on about fifteen feet when he concealed himself behind a high fence, and watched a few minutes when a colored man came out of the gate with his arms full of plunder. The burglar started across the avenue, when Marshal Sweeny started in pursuit ordering him to halt, which he did, dropping everything and making an assault upon the officer. After a sharp tussle, Sweeney called the other officers, when Mayor Dorrian, discovering the fight between the burglar and Sweeny fired his pistol for the purpose of calling together the party. The burglar then made another attack on Mr. Sweeny, when Sweeny fired his pistol hitting him in the nec, breaking it, and killing him. The burglar was Jord Trammell, recently from Columbia County. A coroner’s verdict states that deceased came to his death from a pistol shot fired by Officer Sweeny while in the discharge of his official duties. The deceased was buried yesterday, we learn at the expense of the county. While we regret the death of anyone, we must commend our officers in their determination to stop the burglaries, and trust they will not stop their efforts until the whole gang of thieves are killed or driven from the city. 8/15/1885 Anthony Sweeny returned this morning from a month's visit to the states of Kansas and Missouri.
