She was descended from early Brazoria County settlers. She had attended First Methodist Church, Sweeny, TX. David R. Brumbelow was a relative. His dad, Joe Brumbelow, was Ella Follet Smith’s nephew. Joe Brumbelow’s mother was Carrie Mae (Follett) Brumbelow, a sister to Ella Smith. Ella Follett Smith, the Hudgins, and Folletts are mentioned in the book, “The Wit and Wisdom of Pastor Joe Brumbelow.” In her later years, she was helped in many ways by her nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Her family loved her and took good care of her. When Aunt Ella was well in her eighties Bill and Lavinia (Bonnie) Brumbelow took her on a trip with them, driving all the way to Alaska and back. [There are two Bonnie Brumbelows in the family.] Ella Smith enjoyed hunting and fishing. She was proud of a picture of a big gar she had caught. She enjoyed picking blackberries, dewberries, and picking up pecans. In his later years, my dad, Joe Brumbelow, used to joke that Aunt Ella was his favorite aunt. The joke was that at that time, Aunt Ella was his only aunt. Aunt Ella was a character. Smiling, some of her relatives told me before the funeral, “I know a lot of stories about Aunt Ella. But none that would be appropriate for you to tell at the funeral.” Toward the end of her life, Ella Follett Smith assured my mother, Mrs. Joe (Bonnie) Brumbelow, and others that she had made peace with God, asked for His forgiveness, and because of her faith in Jesus, knew that she was going to Heaven. Poem used by David R. Brumbelow at funeral service: HE MAKETH NO MISTAKE My Father’s way may twist and turn, My heart may throb and ache, But in my soul I’m glad I know, He maketh no mistake. My cherished plans may go astray, My hopes may fade away, But still I’ll trust my Lord to lead For He doth know the way. Tho’ night be dark and it may seem That day will never break; I’ll pin my faith, my all in Him, He maketh no mistake. There’s so much now I cannot see, My eyesight’s far too dim; But come what may, I’ll simply trust And leave it all to Him. For by and by the mist will lift And plain it all He’ll make Through all the way, tho’ dark to me, He made not one mistake. -A. M. Overton “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” -John 14:1-6; The Bible. Scripture text preached from by David R. Brumbelow at Aunt Ella’s funeral. But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. -1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; The Bible. Scripture read by Rev. Brumbelow at the graveside service. Closed in prayer. -submitted by David R.
