Averyt April 20, 1922 - July 10, 2003 William Eugene Averyt, 81, of College Station, died Sunday, July 20, 2003 at Sheridan of Rock Prairie, where he was a resident for eight years. His previous residence was Houston, Texas. He was born April 20, 1922 in Delaware, Oklahoma, the son of Alton Franklin and Sydney Estelle Rodgers Averyt. Mr. Averyt was an engineering graduate of Texas A&M University, class of 1943 and received a masters degree from the University of Houston. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1950 he married the former Bobbie Tooke. He worked for Northrup Corp. at NASA and with Brown and Root until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Averyt loved being outdoors and working with children. He earned the Eagle Scout award as a young man and continued as an adult leader in Scouting. He was honored with the Silver Beaver award in recognition of his decades of work with the Boy Scouts. Mr. Averyt enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren in Dripping Springs and at Lake Houston. During his last years, he was particularly known for his caring ways, his kind word, and his love for others. Preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Ann Averyt, Mr. Averyt is survived by his wife of 52 years. Bobbie Tooke Averyt of College Station; three children, William E. Averyt, Jr. and wife Layne of College Station, Paula Jean Grigsby and husband Robert of Austin and Robert Franklin Averyt and wife Linda of College Station; a sister, Virginia Pickens of Sunnyvale, California and five grandchildren, Will Grigsby of Austin, Zach Averyt, Laura Averyt, Sarah Averyt and Jennie Averyt, all of College Station. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 23 at Christ United Methodist Church, 4203 Highway 6 South, College Station, with Rev. Jerry House and Rev. Bill Armstrong officiating. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family suggest memorials be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 W. 26th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803
