No history of the progress of Burnet would be complete without mention 

of the late J.H. Stapp, who came to Burnet January 2, 1872.



Mr. Stapp was born February 9, 1851. In 1853, he moved with his parents 

to the Ozark Mountains in Southwest Missouri, in which locality he remained 

until he was about twenty-one years of age. He came to Texas, locating in Waco 

in 1871. During Mr. Stapp's residence of approximately sixty years in Burnet, 

he was closely associated with the religion and social life of the community. 

He served the county as deputy sheriff, constable, deputy assessor and deputy 

collector, as town marshall and worked in the early days with the Texas Rangers. 

He was in the post office sixteen years, serving as postmaster four years. 

He served the Baptist Sunday School as superintendent for thirty-six years. 

Mr. Stapp was in the furniture business in Burnet for about thirty years.



Mr. Stapp was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Lacky, on the 21st day of 

July, 1880. this beloved couple celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary a 

short time before Mr. Stapp's death.



The following children survive them: Charley Stapp, missionary to Brazil; 

Mrs. Will Hickson, Burnet; Hansford Stapp of Burnet; Mrs. W.F. LaForge of 

Burnet; Mrs. L.R. Wimpy of Burnet; Grady Stapp of Austin and Mrs. Troy Brooks 

of Nederland.



Mr. and Mrs. Stapp were bulwarks of the Baptist Church, and friends to every 

citizen of the community.
