Before he died in 1939, he asked his son, James Edward Watson, to build a cemetery. James Campbell "J. C." donated an acre of land along the US Highway 183 near the Chapel Hill Methodist Church for the Watson Cemetery. He wanted a place along the highway so "he could hear the cars go by" and a place where water drained away. Also, he wanted a burial place for the people in the community. James Edward "Ed" Watson started on the cemetery in 1939, building the masonry work at the entrance, hauling rocks from Florence, Texas. He also built his father's and mother's monument. Some years later and as the cemetery grew, the Watson Cemetery Association had it's inception on April 12, 1973. At that time Mr. & Mrs. C. C. Castleberry donated a second acre of land to enlarge the cemetery. Mr. Dan Taylor surveyed the cemetery and Mr. Jerry Goodson drew up the plots. Several men donated their time to mark the lots in the cemetery. A draft of the by-laws and regulations governing the Watson Cemetery Association was submitted and approved on November 6, 1975 - the board of trustees consisted of Tom McCormick, John Earnest, Mrs. Leslie McCoy, Jack Montgomery, J. C. Williams, and Howard Gilmore. Members continued to work the cemetery until 1982 when their goal was reached for a perpetual care cemetery. The community and members take pride in this cemetery.
